Dearest Lovely, Loyal L’addicte Readers,

Thank you for your years of daily readership, comments and interest in what I have to say about the fashion world. When I started the blog back in 2009, I never thought I’d actually have people who’d be interested in what I have to say, nor did I know how much I loved saying it. As I enter into a new chapter in my life (goodbye, college, hello, working world!), I’m also embarking on a new writing adventure, this blog.

A Simple Guide to Growing Up Your Wardrobe will be, of course a blog about fashion and shopping, much like L’addicte was. BUT, it will also be about other things I’m finding myself interested in such as modern day etiquette, home decor, travelling, & maybe even some forays into cooking … who knows, I’m feeling adventurous. I’m looking at this blog as a new adventure in itself. A new way to grow, explore new topics … and most of all get what I want out of life, and hopefully help you, my fellow savvy women get what you want, too.

I hope you’ll follow me over here on Tumblr (and bear with me while I learn the new platform), and are interested in what I have to say.

i have to say how utterly obsessed i am with fall fashion this year ( as if i haven't already said that enough, i know), but i just can't help but to constantly proclaim my love for the fresh look + feel of the upcoming season. finally, a little distance from the flashy 80s fashion that's dominated the runways and streets for so many seasons.

i've seen different versions of this look in many places, but i love how easy it is to replicate ... it's just so chic. how to? grab an oversized sweater, (cable knits welcome!), a full, tea-length skirt, a leather belt & your in business.

if you watch the city (i'll admit it's a guilty pleasure of mine) the name olivia palermo might make you cringe. yes, she, or her character at least is a bit on the rude side, but you've got to admit, the girl's got style. she always looks put together, no matter the occasion. in my opinion, she's one to take a cue from when experimenting with your wardrobe.

if you know me, you know fall is my favorite season for fashion. + this coming season is looking to be one of my all-time faves. with a fresh mix of 1940s demure, menswear + a dash of modern glitz + rebellion ( usually in the form of denim, leather bombers or sequins ), who couldn't love what's to come? all reasons why i was extremely excited when i came across these 2 fabulously styled lookbooks.

to boost back to school season sales, american eagle has paired with major cell phone providers like at&t, sprint, verizon to offer one of over 40 different free smartphones ( + a $25 ae gift card ) to any customer who tries on a pair of their jeans. the catch: must sign up for 2 year service plan, but hey, if you happen to be free of a contract or looking to switch providers in the near future, this deal is definitely for you. the campaign starts july 21 and goes through august 3, assuming supplies last.

a perfect cocktail for the 4th.

+ frozen lemonade concentrate
+ 1 bottle seltzer water
+ 1 pack strawberries
+ 1 pack blueberries, popped in freezer
+ vodka, preferably citron flavored, chilled
+ pitcher + glasses
+ blender (optional, but recommended)

step one: put blueberries in freezer until chilled, chop strawberries + puree in blender. if you don't have a blender, chop finely + mash with a spoon in a bowl until you get as close as possible to puree.

step two: mix lemonade concentrate in pitcher with seltzer water according to directions on package ( look for correct amounts), replacing water with seltzer water.

step three: add in strawberry puree, frozen blueberries; mix well.

step four: add one (or two if you like strong drinks)chilled shots of vodka to each glass (serve in highball glasses or tumblers) ... happy 4th!

after getting their "exclusive" email this a.m., i had to check out what they have in store for fall '10 ( the most exciting season in a long time, in my opinion ). the verdict: they didn't reveal too many items + some of the items were already available online, but they do have a nice little selection that looks promising for next season's shoppers + a whole lot of neutrals. my favorite pieces:

what you'll need:

+ 3 apricots
+ 3 peaches
+ 1 package of raspberries
+ 1 bottle of dry white wine, chilled ( i love concha y toro's sauvignon blanc - about $13 for a jumbo, but delicious bottle )
+ 1 wine carafe or pitcher ( shown above, available here )
+ white wine glass(es) ( available here )
+ straws ( shown above, available here )

step one: slice your apricots and peaches into wedges. remove the skin of your peaches + pits of both fruits.

step two: add all 3 fruits into your carafe/pitcher (save a few raspberries for garnish) + pour chilled wine on top. let it sit in refrigerator for about 1 hour.

step three: serve with straws in white wine glasses, garnished with a single raspberry.

step four: invite a few friends over + enjoy!

how to wear clogs [without looking like an idiot].

i'm not sure how i feel about full-on backless clogs, but i'm definitely loving the clog inspired shoes in stores this season. the only dilemma? how to wear them without looking like frumpy, because trust me, clogs can make an outfit instantly frumpy (think crocs). i instantly fell in love with the bold ones below + created two outfits based around them, but any variation should work!

the clogs:

outfit one: bf buttondown (worn tucked in), high-waisted tights + platform clogs. definitely reminds me of olivia newton-john's outfit from grease (during the last scene, of course).

outfit two: floral dress + platform clogs. for some reason, these two go together perfectly.

in my opinion, the best kind of cocktail involves fresh ingredients. for a twist on the much-loved mimosa, i used fresh squeezed oranges + grapefruits. what you'll need:

+1 bag of oranges
+1 grapefruit
+honey
+1 bottle of champagne, chilled (or sparkling water to make the non-alcoholic version)
+1 juicer (mine is from anthropologie)

step one: using your juicer squeeze oranges + 1 grapefruit until you reach your desired amount of juice.

step two: pour some honey onto a plate and dip the top of your champagne flute[s] into it (this gives it a perfectly sweet honey accent).

step three: pour your fresh squeezed orange-grapefruit juice into the flute{s}, filling it about 1/2 way + top it off with the chilled champagne

step four: sit back, relax + enjoy!

sometimes, especially summer time, city living gives me a serious case of the greens ... or lack there of. obviously, this has inspired me to think of different, inexpensive ways to "green" my apartment (minus the need for a green thumb). the perfect solution? a self-containing mini eco-system - the terrarium.

first step: pick up a few, about 3, glass jars ( i recommend these from ikea in 68oz, 34oz + 17oz ), a terrarium kit from terrain to keep things simple + a mini orchid, also available at ikea or local flower store.

second step: add a layer of stones, then soil + finally the moss. for the larger jar, add your mini orchid after the soil + stones, then position the moss around. don't let the flower or leaves touch the glass.

final step: spritz with water ( not too much!) + close the container. keep out of direct sunlight + you're all done, enjoy!

mulberry for target.

quite a few reliable sources (aka wwd) have been talking about a mulberry-target collaboration coming this fall. although i haven't seen anything on the target site, i'm pretty sure (+ pretty excited) that this collection's happening. the bags, most likely inspired by the alexa bag (above), are rumored to hit stores october 10, but pricepoints are still unknown.

drexel fashion show '10.

tomorrow marks the debut of a year of blood,sweat+tears for many up+coming philly-based fashion designers + about 5 months of event planning/blood,sweat+tears for some of my colleagues. what's happening tomorrow, you ask? none other than drexel's annual student fashion show ... + the largest one yet.

this year's show, courteously hosted by urban outfitters at their beautiful hq in philly, will feature 42 fabulous undergrad + graduate collections ... + i know they're fabulous. this show is not one to miss + the ticket prices are extremely reasonable. the show also marks the launch of the design+merchandising magazine, of which i'm a contributing author (so, obviously can't wait for that either!). as far as i know tickets will be on sale at the door so stop by if your saturday is free, i know i'll be there.

haute couture, gaga + why we need them.

since it's foundation by charles worth in the mid-19th century, haute couture has truly become it's own art form - wearable art (my favorite kind). recently, though, + somewhat unfortunately, the focus has shifted to the pret-a-porter (or ready-to-wear, in english) runways as many people are unwilling to pay the astronomical price it costs to own a one-of-a-kind garment ... + let's not forget how expensive it is to produce + show a couture collection (think, extravagant runway shows + one-of-a-kind hand sewn designs). right now, there are only 10 haute couture houses that are still in existence. will haute couture survive the 21st century? that has been a question in the minds of many fashionistas.

okay, so here goes a mini lesson [ it's interesting i promise!] :

haute couture [n.]: 1. the houses or designers that create exclusive + often trend-setting fashions for women 2. made to order for a specific customer, and it is usually made from high-quality, expensive fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finish by the most experienced and capable seamstresses, often using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques 3. literal translation - "high sewing"

in order for a house to be considered one of haute couture, they must meet specific requirements. for example, the designer/house must show at least 35 daytime and evening wear looks in paris each season, have an atelier (workshop) in paris that has 15+ full-time employees + most importantly, be invited by another member of the chambre syndicale de la haute couture.

i'm sure when looking at couture collections like the high-end origami head pieces from the chanel picture above, you've thought 'how could that ever translate into or influence my any pieces in my wardrobe?' or 'how could the designer possibly consider that a garment?' but it's all in the art of fashion, my fellow fashionista.

have you ever seen a chanel haute couture show or any couture show for that matter? well if you haven't, get youtubing! the shows are extremely entertaining, have amazing set design ( see the chanel haute couture set streaming above ) + are great displays of what's going to be in this year + years to come - from your favorite designer rtw collections right down to the mass merchandiser collections you might shop.

+ sometimes the collections being shown are not supposed to be worn, they're just supposed to be shown to create inspiration. think of it as going to a museum and observing the art - you probably wouldn't go home and attempt to paint an exact replica of a toulouse-lautrec, but maybe you take the look, feel, or coloration into consideration when painting a piece of your own.

ever since gaga stepped onto the scene, or should i say, exploded, she's rocked plenty of what a normal person would consider unwearable outfits. she takes the obnoxious/sculptural/kooky designs by designers such as the late a. mcqueen and wears them ... + how they're supposed to be worn. and thank goodness!

seriously, when's the last time we had someone who fearlessly rocked an avant-garde style? sure we've had the bubblegum pop stars who dressed in 'fashionable' clothes for the sake of being sexy, but the last fearless style icon i can remember is madonna + that was in the 80's, ladies.

what to take away from the lesson? that while you might not want to wear exactly what's going down couture runways/on lady gaga's body, you do still take something from those sources + translate them into your own life. this is why we need people who are willing to send crazy garments down the runway + those brave souls who create waves by wearing them. the world would be such a dull place without these taste-makers and trendsetters + we'd have to find other renewable sources of creativity to inspire us. in other words, vive l'haute couture!

this article is a little departure from what i normally write since i do usually like to keep strictly to fashion content on the website, but i feel like this little motivational bit that applies to every aspect of life that all of you can relate to - from fashion to frienships to work.

if there's one thing i've learned over my lifetime: there will always be people who are have nothing better to do than try to bring you down. it's unfortunate and you can't always avoid these people because they tend to leech on to those who are more successful than them. in high school, maybe it was the "cool" girls, in college, a classmate trying to sabotage your work, in the work place, a co-worker that constantly tears apart your work, or in your daily life, a friend who turned out to be anything but.

something that i've had to realize about these people is that it's nothing personal, because for the most part (minus the "friend") they know nothing about you - it's their own insecurities coming to the surface ... some people just give off negative energy and lead negative lives. and i know it's a difficult thing to do - to bite your tongue (my gosh, do i know that), but in the grand scheme of things, it's truly worth it. because consider them, who puts so much time and effort into hating/hurting you, and condsider you - your priorities certainly don't involve them.

so try to remove yourself from the situation as best you can. i fully believe in karma. do something good, and it will come back to you, do something bad, and it comes back to you tenfold. so remember, if someone or something is trying to drag you down with them, do as my best friend would say : " illegitimis nil carborundum," - aka don't let the bastards get you down.

but anyway, what would the article be without a little fashion? here's my fave "keep calm and carry on" carry-all bag for when you're having one of those days. p.s. it's a steal!

trend report: odd spring trends

i don't know about you, but i've seen a lot of trends that are big this spring (both on the runway + in stores) that no one would have ever considered wearing this time last year. among the trends are warm weather boots, see- through tops + socks with shoes. the crazy thing, a lot of these trends seem so 90s ... could 90s grunge be making a retail comeback?
warm weather boots... are everywhere! this is usually the time that stores send their boots to the sale rack, but lately it's been the opposite. many trendy retailers are debuting new boots to be worn in the spring. i love.
lingerie as clothing ... this trend started on the runway [+ can be seen in bottega venetta's s/s collection]+ has made its way down to the fashionable masses. bralettes + mesh skirts are being sold in stores like top shop.
chambray ... everything. a denim-like fabric that's being used for shirts, shoes, jumpsuits, you name it. + i thought most of us were scarred from our iron-on denim jacket days.
socks with shoes ... yet another 90s trend no one saw making a comeback. surprisingly, i adore this look + have been rocking it myself. [image from burberry prorsum s/s 2010]
crop tops ... started popping up a few months ago, but are becoming even more prominent on the retail scene this spring. wear them if you dare [or use for layering, probably the better choice].

like any good fashion addict, i spent this past fashion week with my eyes glued to my computer screen, checking wwd for every possible update. from new york to paris, the runways were consumed by collections that were inventive, gutsy + beautiful. + while spring was the focus ( it feels miles away! ), watching the runways this season is a smart way to get a jump on good winter purchases that carry into the next season.

i'm constantly trying to find ways to take my favorite runway looks + make them work as everyday ensembles. let's be real, while we were in awe over mcqueen's armadillo heels + rodarte's cobweb dresses, they might look a little ridiculous off the runway. + i'm sure everyone can agree that the designer price tags don't exactly agree with a recessionista budget.

here are some great ways to take the best looks from the couture world + make them work in the real world:

This playsuit is great because its shimmery without being too in-your-face. Add a few statement gold accessories et voila!

ok, so i guess i can leak a raw image or two from my photoshoot this past week. my shoot, based around the little black dress, was shot by fashion photographer micole rondinone + i can't even begin to say how happy with the results (even though the photos aren't even edited yet!). i was the stylist + art director of the shoot + had a blast working with the models + photog. could this be my calling in life? we'll see i guess... what do you think? send your feedback or post on the blog!

what to wear when ... interviewing for a fashionable co.

so you've perfected your resume + readied your portfolio, but now the more important question what will you wear to the interview?

when interviewing with a company where fashion is a priority, how you present yourself can actually give you an edge over the competition. in fashion, it's important to showcase your personality through your clothes. you want to look polished + professional, but still show that you have an eye for fashion and accessorizing. chances are, your interviewer will notice your Tory Burch heels or compliment you on your perfectly assembled accessories. of course your smarts and determination will get you the job, but looking the part can only help you make a positive + lasting impression!

here are some tips:
1.less is more. throwing on every piece of designer digs makes you look tacky, not fashionable.

2.do stick with the season. staying up-to-date with the latest trends shows that you're informed on whats going on in the industry.

3.feel free to mix in some vintage. whether its a cool 70s blazer or a great piece of your grandmother's old jewelry, vintage pieces are always a plus (+ can even be great conversation starters).

4.dress for your position. if you're interviewing for an art director position, it's okay to dress it down + look more creative. if you're interviewing for ad sales, its good to look a little more polished. know your audience!

5.do not for any reason wear: low-cut shirts, super short skirts, nude pantyhose, exposed lingerie looks, anything denim or latex, or faux lashes. also note, this is not the time or place to take extreme fashion risks.

6.KEEP IT REAL. don't try to be something you're not. you want to showcase your personality + give your future employer a better idea of your personal style.

i'm constantly on the look-out for beautiful things - cute, new trends, jewelry that catches my fancy, etc. sometimes i swear my mind is permanently set to shopping mode. i know this is also true of my colleagues, so, i decided to round up their spring must-haves (and asked them to narrow it down to a mere 3 items... tough!) so you can start to get an idea of things you might need to have. oh + fyi: these ladies are definitely ones you want to take advice from.

M's picks:
1. preppy, flat oxfords. i've been eyeing them up for a while now, + think it's about time to buy. how cute would they be with a pair of cuffed trousers?

2. a nude mesh shirt/dress. strictly for layering purposes, of course. i see it as a new, sexy way to show (but not really show) some skin. i can imagine so many outfit combos coming out of this ...

3. anything green. (i mean the color , not the movement) + every possible shade of it. hello, seafoam/lime/neon/kelly/emerald!

1. a jumpsuit! i have been searching for the perfect one, which is really tricky - it needs to fit just right + not be too tight in the wrong places. + they look cute in any length! this particular short style is amazing for sunny spring weather!

2. zac posen for target: this isn't exactly a thing, but i am so freaking excited for this line. i'm a sucker for dresses + the collection features mostly dresses with a mix of some cute graphic tees + skirts + even a bathing suit. my favorite look is this printed maxi dress.

3. girly mens shoes:i've been trying to get a sweet pair of men's oxford shoes (besides the ones i swiped from my brother) + this spring there are adorable girly versions. i'm in love with this pair - they make me feel like the weather can only be nice!

1.i absolutely need this dress for the spring. the large floral pattern + sleeve length make it flirty and fun! worn casually or dressy, its such a great piece as the weather starts getting nicer. to me lilly pulitzer-esque prints scream nice weather.

2. these broken-in boyfriend chino shorts are an absolute must have! i love anything boyfriend style + these have a comfy casual fit that you can style differently by rolling them up or leaving them long. paired with the long-sleeved button down, its a perfect combo for the spring weather.

3.to me, the best part about spring is taking out all of your cute sandals and letting your feet breathe! everything about these slouchy suede anklet thongs is perfect...i love the color + the buckle embellishment makes the shoe.

1. sleeveless blazer [not-quite-a-vest].we can all agree that blazers were a staple item for f/w 2010. not to worry, blazers are still a go-to piece for our on-the-go lifestyle this spring, too! i can't wait to translate my favorite piece into spring by going sleeveless.

2. vibrant hues. of course with Spring comes colors! lots of them. + unlike f/w, spring allows us to play with all sorts of airy fabrics + vibrant colors. i personally love fun, silk prints that allow for draping and movement. this s/s, i'll be sure to take a note from proenza schouler + accent my wardrobe with the beauty of brights [electric + aqua blues are my favorite!]

3. jumpsuits are definitely making their presence known this season. providing a relaxed glamourous look, jumpsuits can easily take you from a day in the office to a night on the town.

on the industry: is target democratizing fashion?

not single- handedly, but this big box retailer sure does have a hand in distributing fashion forward products to the masses, and at afforadable prices. it all started with behnaz sarapfour in 2006. early 2009 gave us alexander mcqueen, december debuted rodarte, and this spring will bring zac posen (yay!). with price points in the $14.99 to $149.99 range, and because buying clothes at target is considered acceptable (wal-mart? ha.), just about anyone can afford to have a piece of "designer" clothing.

the best part about these collections is that you can see the designer's influence. unlike a lot of other major retailers, go international and designer collaborations for target not just tee shirts with the designer's logo - they're actual stylish garments. quite a few of these items are considerably fashion forward. despite having cut back some of the bells and whistles for mass production and a lesser fabric quality, the lines translate extremely well to a discount pricepoint. and ... they're exclusive! go international and designer collections are only in [target] stores for 45 days.

although those with a "fashion-for-the-few" mindset might be cringing, i think it's about time. it's great to see fun, trendy "designer" clothes at an affordable price -- because sorry, but money does not buy fashion sense.

h&m's upcoming garden collection will instantly have you ready to shed some layers + embrace the coming spring (buh-bye winter blues!). the floral-based line is exciting for a number of reasons. 1, it's heavy on fun mixed prints + dresses + jackets. 2, everything is eco-friendly! all of the garments have been made from organic + sustainable materials like organic cotton + linen, recycled polyester + tencel which is unusual for fast-fashion retailers. 3 ( + perhaps the best reason of all) the entire line is affordably priced for under $60.

as you probably know, prints + pastels were everywhere on the spring 2010 runways. h+m's garden collection is the answer to every fashionista's spring needs. it offers the perfect combination of pale, romantic floral prints + abstract, brightly colored, 70s-inspired patterns. a few of the standout pastel pieces include cotton floral print shorts, a great basic beige anorak, + a pale pink, body con dress with textured fabric roses on the capped sleeves.

the brighter side of the collection is just as stellar, with cerulean blue ruffled shorts, a watercolor patterned bustier, + a wide-sleeved kimono-inspired wrap dress. my personal favorites were the textured red rose strapless dress + cropped jacket. hats off to the people over at h+m for creating an eco-friendly, affordable collection that is both on-trend + full of must-haves for spring! i know ill be waiting anxiously with my fellow fashionistas until it hits stores at the end of march.

too-low jeans ... pair with a menswear insp button down ... to cover any unwanted exposure and suspenders

the not-so-flattering tee shirt you just can't get rid of ... cut off the top - completely so it hangs dramatically off of your shoulds ( + don't wear it with a tank underneath )

your long pendant necklace... layer with other necklaces

slightly worn, old pumps... add feathers

faux-leather shorts ... wear with flowy + super girly tops and shoes to add a twist to the all-black tough-luxe style.

fitted vest ... wear buttoned under a cardi or blazer

the basic black dress that everybody made / owned in 2009. wear with a pair of fun oxfords

your seemingly boring but tried + true jeans ... sequin crop top

some might be quick to think that sequin pants are best left in studio 54, but if you checked out the fall '09 runways, you might think twice! sequin pants are a fun and simple way to add some shimmer to your outfit, and they're surprisingly easy to pull off. but, you must follow some guidelines:

1. let the sequin pants be your main focus of the ensemble - keep everything else simple + basic. keep accessories low-key and stay away from busy patterns!

2. try to balance out the pant. if you're rocking sequined harem pants, wear a form-fitting tank, or if youre opting for some bedecked trousers, wear a slouchy tee.

3.a black blazer is an easy final touch, as it serves to give the eye a place to rest amidst all the sparkle.

winter faux pas.

every season has its hottest trends + must haves , but along with these come the dreaded fashion faux pas. a lot of faux pas i've observed thus far have to do with bulky + cumbersome clothing. for you, the season spent bundled up doesn't have to be bulky. i've compiled this list help you avoid these mishaps while staying warm + looking sensibly chic.

1. bubble coats ... instead try a peacoat or belted trench. they're much more flattering. why add 15 pounds when you don't have to?

2. uggs ... i know, they're comfy, warm + easy to throw on ( i'm guilty of this), but, they're also clunky, awkward + instantly make an outfit too casual. ... instead, try moto boots or riding boots. they're truly just as warm if you have a thick pair of socks on.

3. bulky turtlenecks. ..i'm not saying don't wear them because they can be super cute, but wear them with a pair of skinnys or tights. this way, you balance out your proportions a little more.

4. bare legs = a no no. with all the cute, decorative tights that are out there this season, there's no reason for you to go bare-legged (that is, unless you live somewhere warm).

5. sweatpants ... are only acceptable for the gym. instead, try opaque tights - they're just as comfy.

most of you will be packing your bags + heading home for the long weekend / turkey day. so obviously, the most relevant thing for me to blog about is how to pack a ( stylish ) weekender bag that will allow you to survive thanksgiving + your fam.

1. the bag to store your belongings.

2. i am thankful for ... cards to make your mother happy with some fill-in-the-blank cards highlighting each person in your family's best traits.

3. a roll-up toiletry bag. these bags are especially handy when you're carrying liquids + cute clothes. ( don't forget your under eye cream! )

4. a circle scarf . it can be worn so many ways. check out the amer. apparel site for some inspiration.

5. a night before thanksgiving outfit : jumper + lace up peep-toe booties +

tribal necklace.

6. a hangover bar to take care of your thursday morning headache so you can enjoy the feast.

7. an outfit for thanksgiving day ... dress + sheer tights + ballet flats + cardi.

8. bf jeans. i'm not encouraging overeating, but you know you ( + i ) probably will, so might as well be prepared.

genius, pure genius. whoever invented these babies deserves a handshake or pat on the back. already a hot commodity in london, roll-up shoes are hard to get a hold of in the u.s. - that is, if you don't have l'addicte to send you in the right direction. these ballet flats are perfect for small clutches, work totes + gym bags ( think long night in heels + achey feet). + you can own a pair for a mere $25.

just kidding. there obviously weren't that many receptions involved with the arts of fashion symposium, but it sure felt like it. attending the receptions was a responsibility that came along with being a part of the fashion show crew - and something i didn't mind at all ( i love social / networking events ) .

location: 17th floor of brand new building, floor to ceiling windows aka an amazing view of the philly skyline.
